How the order is decided

   Board certification

   We require certification by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS) and/or the American Board of Otolaryngology, or an equivalent facial plastic surgery fellowship. General plastic surgeons who mostly operate on the body are not listed, even when they are excellent.

2. 02

   Fellowship training

   A dedicated one- or two-year facial plastic surgery fellowship after residency, and where it was completed.

3. 03

   Face-only focus and years in practice

   How long the surgeon has limited their practice to the face and neck. Volume in a narrow field correlates strongly with outcomes.

4. 04

   Procedure-specific depth

   We score each surgeon per procedure, not just overall. A surgeon can be first for otoplasty and fourth for hair transplant.

5. 05

   Facility and safety

   Accredited surgical facilities (AAAASF, AAAHC, hospital privileges) and anesthesia practices.

6. 06

   Reputation and teaching

   Academic appointments, peer recognition (Castle Connolly, Salt Lake Magazine Top Docs), media and patient-reported reputation. We do not display star ratings or review counts because they are easily manipulated.

The surgeon marked Editor’s №1 pick holds that position on every procedure page where he is listed. Today that is Dr. Steven Mobley of Mobley MD, chosen for his double board certification, more than two decades of face-only practice and former leadership of facial plastic surgery at the University of Utah. If any listing is ever sponsored, it will be labeled as such on the page itself.
